Lincoln's Summer Home and Halloween Naval Academy Concert

In August we visited Lincoln's Summer Home / Cottage with our friends, Ed and Cindy Cole. This home, next to the DC soldiers' hospital, was a little cooler and more mosquito-free than the White House, and Lincoln loved it there in the summer.  He rode his horse three miles from the home to the White House every day. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation in this home, and a constant stream of visitors and suppliants came to him here. When he looked across the grounds, he could see the unfinished Capitol Building Dome, and before his term ended, he made sure it was completed as a national symbol of unity. His sons played with soldiers recuperating on the grounds. We felt very close to Lincoln there.

In October we drove to Annapolis with Ed and Cindy Cole, ate delicious crab cake, saw some crazy Halloween decor in the port town, and went to the US Naval Academy Halloween concert in the historic USNA chapel.  As we stood in line, midshipmen in costume- including some who made very lifelike statues--entertained us. The concert was masterful. A talented organist played "The Phantom of the Opera" and other songs on the organ; midshipmen portrayed a wide variety of music from the macabre to Disney in the midst of dazzling light shows, and  it concluded with the national anthem as our flag was unfurled from the topmost balcony. On our way outside, angels (midshipmen in costume) reminded us that good overcomes evil.

Huge Halloween decor in downtown!
